November Newburyport Memory Cafe
Right at Home Haverhill and Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley are proud to mutually collaborate to bring, “In This Magic Moment Memory Cafe,” to the Newburport community. Together our organizations are committed to bringing inclusive programs and activities to our senior population, families, caregivers and all who are affected from Alzheimer’s disease, dementia(s) and other cognitive impairment.
Our cafe meets on the second Tuesday of the month from 1:00-3:00pm at the Newburyport Senior Center located at 331 High Street in the activity room.
Program volunteers from our office included Celeste Begley, Community Relations Director and Victoria Guskiewicz, Community Relations Coordinator, and from Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley, Cynthia Hession, Caregiver Advisor and Lyn Brennan, Care Manager.
On Tuesday November 6th, at this month’s cafe, we had two very special activities: care package assembly for veterans and a relaxation exercise. For the first hour, we put twenty care packages together for a platoon of military service members. Inside each care pack we put one toiletry item which included goods such as: toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, tissues etc. In addition to these items, we all wrote a personal thank you card to go inside. For the second hour of the program, Barbara Maffeo, owner of Brain and Body Yogaled a relaxing yoga routine for the group. In addition to our activity, we served fresh apple cider and warm pies (blueberry and apple) from Man’s Orchard in Methuen, MA.
Next month’s program will be held on Tuesday, December 4th from 1:00-3:00pm and will feature a delightful holiday activity, cheerful music, refreshments and more! Our cafe’s will resume in the spring, stay tuned for more details!
