More Senior Fall Risk Myths

Falling, is not a natural part of the aging process, though it is common among seniors. In fact, 1 in 4 adults 65 and up experience a fall. Some other myths you may have heard about senior falls include:

  • You can prevent falls by limiting activity
  • You can prevent falls by remaining at home
  • You can prevent falls solely by wearing proper footwear
  • Becoming dependent on walking aids can increase fall risk
  • A minor fall is no big deal and not worth mentioning

Time to Debunk

Why is falling not a part of the natural aging process? Falls are typically a sign that point to health risks in your loved ones.

Why does limiting your activity not reduce fall risk? Reducing your level of physical activity can result in reduced muscle mass and strength, as well as stiffened joints. This can increase the risk of falls because your loved one no longer has the strength to carry themselves and the flexibility or coordination to remain balanced. It can also increase the risk of developing other health related issues such as heart disease, arthritis, and depression.

Why does remaining at home not reduce fall risk? The home is actually where half of all senior falls happen, with 80% off falls in the home occurring in the bathroom.

Why does only wearing proper footwear not reduce fall risk? Although it may help, seniors don’t significantly reduce their risk of falls by wearing the right shoes. The top common reasons for senior falls are physical fitness and side effects from medications.

Why does depending on walking aids not increase fall risk? Walking aids do not undermine your loved one’s ability to remain physically active, but instead encourage it. It is also never the goal of a medical provider or caregiver to have a loved one solely rely on them unless absolutely necessary.

Why is it important to mention small falls? It is important to tell your family, caregiver, and medical providers any time you have fallen. It is a proactive approach to preventing future falls and evaluating your loved one for other medical issues before they become serious.
