Hamilton Park Rehabilitation Center Dementia Presentation
The conference room at the Hamilton Park Rehabilitation Center in Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn, was spacious and well lit. It slowly began to fill up with the Director of Nursing, her staff of nurses, the Director of Social Services, and a few of her staff, along with nurse assistants and even one of the doctors.
As Walter Ochoa, owner of the Right at Home offices in Brooklyn and Staten Island, began his Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT) presentation, you can tell the audience was immediately intrigued. His PowerPoint demonstration is gripping and for the next hour had everyone interacting with him. When the two audience members volunteered to wear the virtual equipment and go through the Alzheimer’s/Dementia experience, the attendees were at the edge of their seats. Some had tears in their eyes. Others were wide eyed as the volunteers tried to perform the simple tasks requested of them. Things like folding towels or pouring a cup of water. They simply could not accomplish these everyday activities. It quickly became obvious to all, volunteers and viewers alike, that to experience the effects of Alzheimer’s even for five minutes can be a confusing and even a traumatic event.
After the training concluded, many people in the audience came up to Walter expressing their heartfelt thanks for this unique and insightful in-service. A few guests even spoke about how they were caring for parents who have Alzheimer’s and the toll it is taking on them and their household.
