Right at Home @ The Phoenix Rehab and Nursing Center in Brooklyn
On July 28th and August 2nd, Right at Home conducted an Alzheimer’s and Dementia training to the Nursing Department and Directors of The Phoenix Rehabilitation & Nursing Center facility in Brooklyn, NY.
With over 5.3 million Americans suffering from Alzheimer’s and the final goal of increasing the understanding and awareness of this disease, the Right at Home office of Brooklyn, represented by Walter Ochoa, explained, among other topics, the reasons why patients with Alzheimer’s may have short term memory disorders.
Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by the abnormal accumulation of Amyloid Plaques and Neurofibrillary Tangles in the brain. These Plaques and Tangles, as they are popularly known, are two types of insoluble proteins that sit inside and around the brain’s cells causing their ultimate collapsing and death. One of the first areas that are affected by this disease is called the Pre-Frontal Lobe which, among other functions, regulates the short term memory. Without the proper functioning of this area of the brain, patients mighty experience short term memory loss which can lead to clients repeating themselves and forgetting activities recently completed.
Right at Home is aware of the effects of this disease and how empathy and patience are the key factors to have a positive impact on the daily care of our clients. Sharing this information with institutions like The Phoenix makes Right at Home of Brooklyn final goal a reality, to improve the quality care for those that we serve.
