When a Senior Care Provider Should be Hired

Senior Care in Brooklyn NY

When our parents get older and are unable to care for themselves, we will probably jump at the chance to provide the help they need. In some cases, the help of a family member is all the elder will need. However, when the elder is suffering from a serious condition, such as Alzheimer’s disease, a professional senior care provider may be needed.

Another reason you may need to hire professional caregivers is if you and other family members are too busy with your own family and work schedules to also care for your elderly parent. If you are wondering if it is time to hire a professional, here are four signs to watch for.

  • The elder is constantly becoming injured. Along with getting older, the senses of elderly adults also become weaker. This may cause them to not understand how much distance they have from where they are standing to the furniture. The inability to gauge how close they are to furniture and other objects, as well as a lack of balance, could cause older adults to easily fall down the stairs. When a senior becomes injured, it could be fatal if not properly treated. Professional home care providers are experienced in first aid and would be able to offer the elder the treatment and care they need.
  • The elder develops sundowners syndrome. Sundowners syndrome is a sleep disorder that causes the senior to become more active at night when they are supposed to be sleeping. This newfound energy at night also means their caregiver will have a restless night. Along with being fatigued during the day, sundowners syndrome can also affect the elder’s behavior, causing them to start arguments easily.
  • The elderly adult wanders. Older adults with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia can easily become confused, causing them to wander. Wandering, especially in unfamiliar places, can cause the elder to get lost and possibly put into dangerous situations.
  • More care is needed than you can give. As much as you want to help care for your loved one, their needs may be more than you are able to help with. Getting extra help from a professional in-home care provider will allow you to still be available to offer your loved one the support and love they need, while a professional takes care of the caregiving responsibilities.

Caring for an aging parent can be difficult, so there is no shame in asking for help. If any of these signs sound like your loved one, it may be time to hire a professional.
