Exercise and Arthritis Presentation Exercise and Arthritis Presentation

Exercise and Arthritis

Exercise and Arthritis was the topic I presented to a group of older adults living at Villas at Stoney Point in SW Cedar Rapids on January 18, 2022.

The activity coordinator at this independent living community asked me to help plan some presentations for the residents this year and we kicked off the schedule with a discussion around the importance of exercise and living successfully with osteoarthritis.  I think the assumption is that activity should be avoided to keep pain at bay and reduce the chance of further joint deterioration.  However, the opposite is actually true!

I emphasized that exercise is important for promoting blood flow into joints and flushing out inflammatory compounds that can cause pain, swelling, and immobility.  In addition, performing safe, enjoyable exercise will maintain strength and flexibility, reducing the risk of further dysfunction.  Exercise should not exacerbate one’s joint pain but could cause muscle soreness, which is perfectly normal.

Right at Home care staff can help people perform a home exercise program or serve as a walking companion to promote physical activity and overall wellness.
