Fall Prevention Presentation

As a speaker for Linn County TRIAD I had the pleasure of presenting Fall Prevention information to NARFE, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, at the Pizza Ranch in SW Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, January 11, 2022.  Learning how to prevent falls is particularly important this time of year!

The main points discussed were to exercise regularly to increase or maintain strength and flexibility; keep pathways clear and well-lit; wear appropriate footwear with rubber soles; slow down and take your time when changing positions; and be aware of the side effects of medications that could contribute to a fall.  One gentleman in the crowd shared a personal story of a drug interaction he was experiencing that caused dizziness and fatigue.  It was later identified by his pharmacist so, fortunately, a change could be made to his drug regimen before something disastrous happened.

Older adults who are taking six or more medications are at much higher risk for having an adverse drug interaction which could cause someone to fall.  Falls are largely preventable so following these tips will prevent injury and keep you active so you can continue to do the things you enjoy!
