Spring 2024 Newsletter

Happy Spring 2024! We hope this newsletter finds you in good health and spirits. We are pleased to share some recent updates from Right at Home in Nassau County and Queens.

WHEELCHAIR MISSION TO KENYA

In March, Owner and CEO Zubin Kapadia traveled to Kenya with the nonprofit Free Wheelchair Mission. He joined five other Right at Home franchisees from around the US and three corporate staff on a mission to help individuals struggling with limited mobility and access to orthopedic equipment. During the week-long trip, they assembled wheelchairs, conducted assessments, and trained recipients. The work was conducted in small villages in northern Kenya surrounding Nanyuki. Since 2001, Free Wheelchair Mission has provided more than 1.4 million wheelchairs free of charge to those in need in 95 developing countries, including Brazil, Columbia, Ethiopia, India, Senegal, South Sudan and more.

HOME CARE ADVOCACY ON CAPITOL HILL

In April, Zubin Kapadia traveled to Washington, DC to advocate for home care reform. Along with members of the Home Care Association of America, Kapadia held meetings with the offices of Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, as well as House Representatives Claudia Tenney and Patrick Ryan. The discussions covered crucial topics such as home care for veterans, health savings accounts, Medicaid access, and immigration policy to support foreign worker visas.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE

In April 2024, Director of Operations Susan Hartmann and Zubin Kapadia attended Right at Home’s annual conference in Kansas City, MO. The four-day event featured panel discussions, roundtables, keynotes, and group meetings on best practices, innovation, leadership, recruitment, and other similar topics. During the conference, Zubin Kapadia was awarded the Right at Home President’s Brand Ambassador award. He shares the recognition with his team, as the entire staff of Right at Home has been invaluable in achieving the organization's success.

CAREGIVERS ADVANCEMENT FUND

Entering its fourth year, our nonprofit Caregivers Advancement Fund (CAF) has made significant progress in advancing its mission to support higher education and provide a safety net for home care aides and their families. To date, the fund has awarded 32 grants totaling $23,000, including 54% for education and 46% for emergency grants. Our innovative micro-lending program, where a portion of emergency loans are repaid by the aide for the benefit of future recipients, has been very successful. To date, $7,500 has been loaned, with 95% repatriated back to the fund. In October 2023, we launched the Refugee Training Program, enrolling nine students in Personal Care Aide (PCA) training and certification. All nine completed the course and seven of these individuals have found caregiving jobs in the New York City area. The feedback from trainees has been overwhelmingly positive, with grant recipients saying that the program has given them new opportunities and a new lifeline.

We are proud to serve Right at Home’s mission to improve the quality of life for those we serve and we thank you for your loyalty!
