Parkinson's disease (PD) is a long-term degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that mainly affects the motor system. By the year 2020, nearly 1 million people in the United States alone will be living with Parkinson's disease. Approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with PD each year.

To help raise funds to combat this devastating disease and provide support for those afflicted with PD, the Parkinson’s Foundation hosts Moving Day Walks throughout the country. On Sunday, October 21st, Moving Day made its way to the country’s second largest city at famed Griffith Park in Los Angeles.

As a national sponsor, Right at Home created a large presence at the event that saw well over 1,000 people attend ranging from local Angeleno’s to participants as far away as Pennsylvania and New York. All were there to raise awareness, funds and, in many cases, walk for and with family members and friends battling this disease.

“We are so proud to be a part of this important community happening,” says Doug Dickstein, owner of Right at Home based in Burbank, California. “The energy and positivity showcased by so many of the attendees we have the honor to meet is inspiring.”

In addition to completing a scenic 3 mile walk in the park, Moving Day participants were treated to free exercise programs from Aerobics to Tai Chi as well as learn about cutting edge technology to help those with PD. In addition, there were many organizations that provide PD support throughout Los Angeles county in attendance. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, UCLA Health, USC Keck Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente were among the local sponsors providing information.

Right at Home also had a well-attended booth, where attendees learned about how Right at Home can provide care aides to assist individuals with PD while providing respite for their family caregivers and loved ones. In addition, Right at Home had an 8-person strong team walking for the cause.

“I’m very happy I was able to be part of this great event,” said Jennifer Gavidia, a Right at Home care aide since 2015 who’s also currently studying to become a Licensed Vocational Nurse.
