February 2019 Presentation: Preventing Senior Falls
On February 7th Mike Callaghan presented a session on 'Falls Prevention' to the residents of Lake Oaks Senior Apartments located at 1916 Wisconsin Ave. Racine, WI.
This presentation covered:
- Statistics related to falls
- Common causes of falls
- The impact of a fall both physical and psychological
- Prevention, including exercises
Falls prevention is an important topic as 1 out of 3 people over the age of 65 will fall this year. The related cost is over $50 billion dollars with 75% of these costs being covered by Medicare and Medicaid. Falls if not dealt with, can be self-perpetuating. If someone falls they may lose self-confidence and feel embarrassed. This can cause them to withdraw from exercising and socializing which can weaken them physically and possibly lead to psychological, such as depression.
If you know someone who is a Fall Risk, talk with them about seeing their doctor for an evaluation. If you would be interested in a presentation contact Mike at Right at Home Kenosha-Racine 262.654.5410
