Senior Self Defense and Staying Safe

Mike Callaghan owner of Right at Home of Kenosha Racine Counties sponsors and is one of the instructors in a Senior Self-Defense program offered to area seniors. Mike and his co-instructor Master Eric Deveau of Equa Do Martial Arts Academy have been presenting this program for several years. The program has been given at many of the independent senior communities, the Kenosha Senior Center, Lake County Senior Advocates, and the Kenosha Silver Sneakers. It is an educational program designed to create elevated awareness at home, in the community, and online.

Topics We Discuss Include:

• Situational Awareness
• Simple Self-defense Techniques
• Day to Day Items That Can Help with Defense
• Avoidance

Mike and Eric also discuss scams, scams at home, on the phone, email, and social media. Eric and Mike present in an interactive manner, giving examples, asking questions, and demonstrating techniques. There are generally a lot of question and answer throughout the presentation.

Our most recent presentation was at Fountain Hills Senior Apartments in Mt. Pleasant, Wi in September 2018. Mike and Eric presented to approximately 50 seniors and were asked to come back to further discuss current scams. Both instructors are passionate about educating the senior population on how to stay safe in our current social environment. Unfortunately, vulnerable seniors are often a target for abuse, for scams, and intimidation. Eric and Mike work to empower their audience when confronted with a negative situation.
