Aging with Dignity

Thank you to Jeremy Geels, Financial Advisor with Edward Jones in Capitola, for hosting an evening at the Best Western Inn and Suites to discuss Aging with Dignity.

Three presentations were made from a variety of local experts in the area of senior care. Vanessa Silverstein from Hospice of Santa Cruz County, Dr. Christian Negard from the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF), and David Bullard from Right at Home – Monterey Bay.

Attendees were given information on the broad spectrum of the type of care that is possible and available in Santa Cruz County, the different costs involved, and what insurance, if any, covers the various types of care.

“Most people are surprised to learn that in-home care is not currently covered by Medicare”, Bullard said. “I think that is one reason why it is so important for people to learn about their options early and then plan. Whether that means saving for potential home care needs, or taking out a Long-Term Care insurance policy” Bullard continued, “or being really nice to their children”, he joked.

But all kidding aside, studies demonstrate the average distance from parents to their nearest adult child is 280 miles. So many people will not have their immediate family living close by, another reason why having a plan is so important.
