A Cautionary Tale

A Cautionary Tale

“I can’t wait to see Betty and that nice man… what was his name again?” Dorothy chatters. She is tired, but happier than her grateful daughter has seen her in weeks. It had been such a struggle to convince Mom that it was time to leave her beloved house. But then the nice placement agency lady had found the perfect community, and Dorothy had even run into an old friend and made a new one there!

“His name was Herb, Mom, and you’ll see them both again in three days!” Three days to move-in… and Mom loved the place. Brenda heaved a sigh of relief.

That night, after her daughter went home, Dorothy decided to get ready for bed a little early – it had been a long, exciting day, and she was very tired…

Dorothy never made it to bed that night. Instead, Brenda found her crumpled on the bathroom floor the next morning.

With a broken hip and arm, 83-year-old Dorothy’s options suddenly dwindled. She was no longer a candidate for the independent living community she had fallen in love with. In pain, sad and confused, Dorothy seemed diminished; frail in a way she’d never been before. Brenda was devastated. The placement agent was devastated.

This story could have ended so differently. Let’s go back in time…

That night, after her daughter went home, Dorothy decided to get ready for bed a little early – it had been a long, exciting day, and she was very tired…

Just then, the doorbell rang. Dorothy opened it to find a young lady with a warm smile. “Hi,” she said, “I’m Darci from Right at Home. I’m here to help!”
