How to Have a Conversation About Aging
Join the Right at Home Palm Beach team on a discussion about aging, presented by Dr. Myra Levick and Dr. Maxine Borwowsky Junge. Talking to your parents or a loved one about the effects of aging can be tricky. Although it is for their own sake, they may feel threatened or embarrassed and refuse to talk about the changes. As their child, they feel that they should be taking care of you, not you taking care of them.
Before anything escalates, it’s always best to get the conversation starting as soon as possible and include other members of your family to see if they have started noticing any changes as well. In some cases, you may want to jot down any of the changes you’ve noticed so you can fully understand what they may need help with. Maybe you noticed they are having trouble getting to doctor’s appointments and always ask for a ride. Or, you may have noticed that they are having trouble doing basic activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, or walking.
We understand these difficulties and often help children of elderly parents work through getting the help they may need. In most cases, they often refuse but later begin to see the benefits of having some help around the house.
