Preventing Suicide in Older Adults

Suicide is major issue amongst older adults, but it is rarely talked about. According to the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, seniors over the age of 65 have high suicide rates. More troubling, those over the age of 85 have the highest rates of suicide among adults.
Warning Signs of Suicide
There are several risk factors that may be a sign of seniors contemplating suicide. Some include:
- Statements about death and suicide
- Feelings of hopelessness or helplessness
- Feelings of depression
- Social withdrawal or isolation
- Difficulty making decisions
