Senior fitness is vital to ensuring that they live a long and healthy life. Regular exercise can help seniors avoid many health problems they may face as they age. To keep seniors active, we host a variety of classes that keep seniors moving. These classes include Balance Classes, a no-contact Boxing Class, Yoga, and much more. Yoga for Seniors
In addition to our balance classes, we also offer a yoga class at Beyond Fitness Delray. As seniors age, their muscles tend to stiffen, and they begin to lose their range of motion as a result. Yoga aids in reducing the effects of aging by keeping the mind alert and active, increasing flexibility and strength, and improving respiration (breathing). What’s more, yoga also aids in reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, reduces the risk of a heart condition, obesity, and diabetes, and improves sleep.
By attending our class regularly, seniors also gain:
- Improved balance and stability
- Improved cardiovascular health
- Increased joint mobility and strength
- Lowered blood pressure and cholesterol
Balance Exercises For Seniors
Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older adults. As they age, their muscle strength and stability begin to decline. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falls result in 2.8 million injuries in emergency hospitals each year. These falls can result can in extended hospital stays due to other injuries the body incurs. After all, a fall for seniors is not just a fall. Falls can cause broken bones, head injuries, hip fractures, and in some cases, death. Beneath the surface, falls can strip a senior’s sense of independence and make them afraid to perform their everyday activities.
Our balance class taught by fitness instructors improves endurance, muscle strength, and flexibility that can help prevent falls and fall-related injuries. Other benefits include:
- Faster reaction time
- Improved coordination
- Stronger bones
- Better brain function
Furthermore, our balance classes are group-based classes design to provide social and emotional support for seniors. When seniors are surrounded by others they can relate to, they feel more comfortable and willing to learn. In addition, they can make new friends, or bring their current ones, gaining motivational support to continue with the class.
Rock Steady Boxing for Parkinson’s Symptoms
Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) is a low impact, non-contact boxing class designed to help those battling Parkinson’s disease at any stage improve their quality of life. Three years ago, we helped bring this class to the Palm Beach County area and are proud to see how this program has improved the lives of others. RSB has proven to reduce and delay symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Boxing helps condition the body for muscular endurance, balance, speed, agility, and overall strength, much like a professional boxer.
How Boxing Helps Parkinson’s
Rock Steady’s class works by attacking the areas that Parkinson’s has weakened. As the symptoms of Parkinson’s progress, it begins to weaken a senior’s ability to walk, navigate, and overall control of the body. To combat this, our boxing class works to strengthen those areas.
