Woodland is located approximately 15 miles northwest of Sacramento and resides in Yolo County which was first established in 1851. The town was later named Woodland after the store owner of “Yolo City” named Frank S. Freeman bought and acquired 160 acres of land in 1857 and began to develop the town hoping it would act as a trading center for one of the richest crop-growing areas in the U.S. In 1859, he suggested to the post office that the town be called Woodland and the post office accepted. On July 5, 1861, the Woodland Post Office was established, and Freeman was made the Postmaster - Woodland was then and official city!
As a rural community, the city is made up of a lot of crop fields but has continued to grow and expand through the years. Now the residents of Woodland have plenty of resources.
