Starting a Book Club For You and Your Grandchildren
There is nothing better than reading aloud to a young grandchild. Their interest and enthusiasm for the stories is heartwarming, and their requests to read the same book over and over again, shows that their pleasure and interest is very real too!
But, at a certain point, grandchildren grow too old to be read to. They may become impatient with what they perceive as being “babied” and the special time you shared becomes a thing of the past.
It doesn’t have to be so. In order to continue to share books and meaningful time with your grandchildren, you might wish to consider starting a book club for you and your grandchildren.
While the main idea is to have fun, this informal book club has many other benefits, including:
- The book club provides a “special time” for you and your grandchildren where you can build a bond and memories that will last a lifetime.
- It encourages and instills a life-long love of reading.
- The “club” enables you to engage in a substantive dialogue with your grandchildren and discuss subjects and ideas that might not come up in any other way.
- It offers you an activity that can be pursued regardless of the weather or geographic proximity. FaceTime and Zoom work just fine for book club discussions.
In the early years you will probably select the book on your own, however, as your grandchildren get older, they should start to play a part in the decision process. By doing that you will better ensure their interest in the discussion.
Grandparents are often at a loss for what to do with their grandchildren especially as they get older. Starting your own private book club offers you an activity that is both fun and beneficial.
If you are ambitious, you can reach out to other grandparents and see if they would like to join your club, thereby increasing the potential for more dialogue about the book and offering new social contacts too.
