Caregiver Training

Right at Home South Shore takes great pride in the quality and competence of our caregivers. First, we begin the process of selecting less than 40% of the applicants that apply for employment. We seek candidates that not only have the skills and compassion to want to work with the elderly, but also, those candidates must have excellent communication skills because companionship and conversation is one of the most important benefits that we bring to our clients.

All caregivers complete a comprehensive orientation program and must pass a competency test before they are placed with a client. Each caregiver is closely supervised by a nurse to ensure that they are following the customized plan of care that is developed for each client's needs. In addition, all caregivers complete the American Alzheimer's Association Level 1 Alzheimer's training program. This program helps caregivers understand the basics of dementia and Alzheimer's disease and highlights how caregivers can better relate to their clients who are suffering from these conditions. It also provides prescriptive strategies on how to redirect these clients when necessary. For clients with advanced stages of Alzheimer's, Right at Home has developed a Core Alzheimer's Care Team, whose caregiving members have completed over 12 hours of rigorous Alzheimer's training. These caregivers have been trained to deal with the most challenging Alzheimer's cases.

As a former Hospice nurse, Libet Callahan, RN, BSN, understands the challenges families face when their loved one is at the end of life. To that end, Libet has developed a Hospice Support Care Team that supplements care and suport that a patient and family may receive from a certified Hospice Agency. This Hospice Support Care team is trained on the philosophy of Hospice and end-of-life care. Their role is to ensure that the patient is clean, comfortable and provide a compassionate presence when family cannot always be with the patient. Right at Home takes great pride in the quality care that our caregivers have given to our Hospice patients and the peace of mind and comfort we have provided to their family members.
