Home Health Aide

When restrictions of aging, disability, chronic illness or cognitive difficulty make it challenging for individuals to care fully for themselves at home, home health aides can assist. A home health aide improves the quality of life for people through professional, hands-on care and compassionate kindness. For many Right at Home clients, a home health aide or caregiver becomes a trusted friend.

Home health aides with specialized training can administer a client’s medication or check vital signs under the direction of a registered nurse or other medical professional. Qualified home health aides may also change bandages and dressings and help with medical equipment. Typically, when in-home clients need skilled health care, home health aides are trained as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) or Patient Care Assistant (PCA).*

Role of a Home Health Aide

Home health aides provide everything from companionship to basic health assistance, including:

  • Bathing and dressing
  • Light housekeeping (laundry, vacuuming, etc.)
  • Medication monitoring
  • Grocery shopping
  • Meal planning and preparation
  • Transportation to doctor’s offices and other appointments
  • Companionship visits
  • Organization of schedules and appointments
  • Physical exercise and at-home therapy exercises

In addition, many home health aides are also trained to check pulse, temperature, respiration, help with braces or artificial limbs and perform a number of skilled nursing duties.

Home health aides can also help with specific in-home care needs related to:

  • Alzheimer’s and Other Related Dementia
  • Hypertension/Stroke Recovery
  • Heart Disease
  • Cancer Recovery
  • Hospice/Palliative Support

"They were able to match my mother with someone that is a great fit for her. We have a caregiver that we like that the service provided. She does the modifications that we ask her to do. They communicate well regarding the scheduling. They have done a good job matching the right person."

"They are very responsive if I have any questions or need to make any changes. I am living in a house with many stairs, and they are able to get things on the different levels of the house. Mary is very attentive when transferring me from my chair to any other seated positions. They are very flexible and can recommend easy solutions if I have questions about billing or insurance. I look for someone that is tall, fairly strong, and can lift the things I have trouble lifting"

"They are easy to work with. If I have to reach them, they are on the phone. They give companionship. They are a lot of caregivers. There is a lot of switching. They are good at getting back to me when I leave messages. They are also good at getting back to my mom when she calls."

"I've used Right at Home three times in the past. Each time, the caregivers that have been sent were really good. There were different people that came. I had knee surgery and needed ice and exercises every hour, and they were good about that. They set everything up for me. They were flexible with the schedule. We had great conversations and even became friends in addition to the care provided.."

"So far, they have some through with their promise of who they will send. The caregiver has been committed and has been on schedule since we started the care. They are helpful because they sit with my husband while I go and do other things. They have been reliable, and the person has always been here. So far, the caregiver has just done simple things for the client. They are very attentive to my husband and very courteous. It was difficult to find someone to provide care where we needed care. I like that they keep me informed of caregivers that they might have available to come and help on the days that we need it. One thing I really like is that he is very polite."
