Debunking Fall Myths

Our Senior Care Services Team In Staten Island, NY Wants To Debunk These Senior Fall Myths

Help spread the correct information on how to decrease the risk of falls for your loved ones

The Great Wall of China is visible from space with the naked eye.  You should never wake a sleepwalker.  Vikings had horned helmets.

Have you heard these common myths before?  There are plenty of them to go around, especially on the topic of senior fall risk and how to reduce it.  Join our senior care services team as we spread the real facts!

Myth: Falling Is A Natural Part of Aging

Just because falls are common among seniors doesn’t mean that it is a natural part of the aging process.  If you look at the top causes for senior falls, they include poor physical fitness, poor diet, medical conditions, and medications.  This means that falls are an important indicator of your loved one’s level of health.

Myth: A Minor Fall Is Nothing To Worry About

No matter what caused the fall or how minor it may seem, it is always important to tell your family, caregiver, or medical providers that it happened.  This is a proactive approach to further reducing falls in the future.  Medical providers can also check your loved one for underlying injuries or illnesses.

Myth: Limited Activity Reduces Fall Risk

This is dangerous myth as it can increase your loved one’s risk of falling.  Limiting physical activity means your senior will become weaker and less flexible.  These can lead to them to not being able to support themselves and stay balanced.  Our senior care services include plans that focus on keeping loved ones physically active on a daily basis.

Myth: Walking Aids Make Seniors Dependent On Them

Walking aids are a great way to encourage physical activity, not limit it.  Seniors are also not instructed by medical providers or caregivers to completely depend their mobility on them.

Myth: Wearing The Right Shoes Is All You Need To Prevent Falls

Even in the right shoes, seniors can be at a high risk of falling.  Getting at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day, eating right, having your vision checked, and talking to your doctor about your medications are far better ways to keep your loved one safe.

Myth: Remaining At Home Can Reduce Fall Risk

It’s a 50/50 split between the number of falls that occur in the home and the number of falls that occur outside it.  In fact, 80% of senior falls happen in the home because they occur in an area where most find it embarrassing to ask for help: the bathroom.
