Firefighters, Sheriff’s Deputies to Take Virtual Dementia Tour
Members of the Wheeling Fire Department and the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office are scheduled to meet with Right at Home personnel on September 7th at the fire department’s headquarters in Centre Market (2126 Market Street, Wheeling, WV 26003 304-234-3776) to gain more of an understanding of Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia-related diseases.
The opportunity to experience the Virtual Dementia Tour will be offered free of charge to enable the firefighters and deputies to experience for themselves the physical and mental challenges those with dementia face every day. The Virtual Dementia Tour uses patented sensory tools and instruction based on research conducted by P.K. Belville, M.S., a specialist in geriatrics and the founder of Second Wind Dreams. The first responders will be outfitted with the patented devices that will alter their senses while attempting simple tasks and exercises.
“This is a great way for our staff members to learn more about dementia-related diseases to prepare them better for the calls that involve local residents who may be suffering from such a disease,” said Ohio County Sheriff Tom Howard. “This is also an opportunity for this office to expand the Project Lifesaver Program that we offer to local residents so that we can better serve and protect the people of Ohio County.”
Right at Home owner April Wintermoyer will be on hand to speak with the first responders and to answer their questions following the Virtual Dementia Tour. The training session will begin at 9 a.m. in a conference room at the fire department headquarters. Along with Sheriff Howard, Fire Chief Larry Helms will be available for questions during this event.
