Those with Alzheimer's can Live at Home with the Right Care

June Is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

I’d like to talk to you about a client that lived in our neighborhood that was very special. Our client – Mrs. T – lived down the block from us. She was 72 years old when we cared for her. She was living with her mother who was 94 and fully functioning. Mrs. T has Alzheimer’s Disease. Her disease, while I wouldn’t call it mild, still allowed her to enjoy the simple pleasures of life and remain safe under the care of one of our excellent caregiver companions. Mrs. T enjoyed walks around the neighborhood, going to the park, chatting and interacting with her caregiver companion, and eating some of her favorite meals. Mrs. T was unique in that we provided a specialist caregiver that helped her by utilizing our Cognitive Care program. While she did have the disease, she did not require assistance with activities of daily living.

I bring up Mrs. T because there is a stigma associated with the disease. The stigma is that, once one needs care and supervision, one needs to become a resident of an institution and should no longer live at home. For us, Mrs. T was living proof that one can be safe and happy remaining in their home by engaging the appropriate in-home care.

If you know someone who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, please help them understand that they don’t need to necessarily move to a facility. They could qualify to receive help in their own home. Have them give us a call at 410-846-0141.
