Ways To Stay Safe and Independent as an Older Driver
We may not think much about our driving abilities after we get our first license. But as we get older, physical and mental changes in our bodies may make it more challenging to operate a vehicle. Age isn’t the only factor that makes for safe driving. Many people continue to drive well as they mature into old age. Here are some things you can do to make sure you continue to be fit to drive.
Ways To Stay Safe and Independent as an Older Driver
Here are some things you can do to make sure you continue to be fit to drive:
- Have your vision checked regularly.
- Choose a car with automatic transmission and power steering and brakes.
- Discuss driving with your doctor.
- Sit high enough in your seat to see at least 10 feet ahead of your car.
- Drive during the day and stick to familiar routes.
- If physical fitness has diminished, seek an assessment with an occupational therapist.
- Get examined if you have pain or weakness in your extremities.
- Avoid listening to the radio or playing music in the car to keep your focus.
