FDA Update on Hand Sanitizers with Methanol
In an attempt to help spread vital information to our community during a worldwide pandemic, Right at Home of Boston Metro West wants to make sure we do our part to help pass important updates as they are presented to us, on how you may be able to protect yourself and your family during these difficult times.
The FDA has issued a new update on hand sanitizers that contain methanol that you need to be aware of. Methanol, or wood alcohol, is a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested and can be life-threatening when ingested. Methanol is not an acceptable active ingredient for hand sanitizers and must not be used due to its toxic effects. FDA’s investigation of methanol in certain hand sanitizers is ongoing and the agency will provide additional information as it becomes available.

People who have been exposed to hand sanitizer containing methanol and are experiencing symptoms (outlined in the FDA update) should seek immediate treatment for potential reversal of toxic effects of methanol poisoning.
