Virtual CE Presentation: Epilepsy and Seizures in Seniors
Right at Home Boston Metro West along with Maplewood at Weston and One Wingate Residences at Needham, present:
Creatively living with dementia: Epilepsy and Seizures in Seniors
As we get older, our risk for epilepsy increases. An Institute of Medicine’s report, Epilepsy across the Spectrum, states that children and older adults are the fastest-growing segments of the population with new cases of epilepsy. Epilepsy is not always the first possibility that comes to mind when an older adult has a seizure or related episode. Its clinical presentation can resemble other conditions that are common in the older population, such as stroke, head injury, brain tumors, brain surgery, serious infections, heart attack, cardiovascular disease, chronic alcoholism, toxic/metabolic disturbances, Alzheimer’s disease, or dementia.
The Epilepsy Foundation’s Seniors and Seizures Training is designed to address the rising incidence of epilepsy in older adults and help health care professionals learn how to identify when an older adult is having a seizure and not just a “senior moment.” This presentation will take place on Wednesday, April 14th from 4:15 PM to 5:30 PM.
At the completion of the presentation you will:
- Recognize 3 types of seizures that are most common in older adults.
- Identify 5 signs or symptoms of epilepsy in older adults.
- Describe 3 first aid steps in helping older adults having a seizure.
- Identify 3 ways epilepsy impacts the older adult population.

About the Presenter:
Mary Cromwell, Community Educator and Trainer -Mary was raised in the Boston area and now currently live in Meredith, NH with her husband. Her youngest daughter Dorothy has epilepsy and lives 5 minutes down the road in her own apartment. It is because of her daughter that she became involved in the epilepsy world. Diagnosed at 4 years year old, and after approximately 20 different medications, a VNS implant and ultimately brain surgery, she is now 5 and ½ years seizure free! Mary worked for the Epilepsy Foundation New England as the NH Field Service coordinator from 2013 – 2017. Her duties included presenting the various trainings offered by the Epilepsy Foundation, including but not limited to School Personnel, Seizures & Seniors and First responders. She left the Foundation in 2017 but recently returned as an Americorps member and the Liaison for Community Education where her primary role is outreach and trainings across the 4 states served by the Epilepsy Foundation New England. She enjoys the training role as it joins her two main interests, epilepsy, because of her daughter, and her career as a teacher. Mary has a BS in physical education and an MA in secondary education.
