A Cruise for Hope

Looking for something fun, interesting and different to do that is also safe and dementia friendly with your loved one? Ever thought of a cruise ship? Well, one company, Holland America Line, is making dreams come true with their dementia friendly Alaskan Cruise Ship. The cruise ship, named ms Eurodam, is designed exclusively for caregivers and their loved ones living with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease and dementia to set sail together.

The cruise includes a wide range of programming, activities and workshops for guests with cognitive impairment, family members and caregivers to enjoy. Some of the activities include: education speakers, writing workshops, wellness and holistic approaches to care, behavioral and communication issues and more. Families that require special accommodations are offered support to be able to enjoy their time with comfort and safety in mind.

It is no question that people who engage in activity see an improvement in their quality of life. The same goes for those with cognitive impairment and memory challenges. There are many activities out there that are beneficial to those with memory issues. While a cruise around Alaska is appealing to many, it may also be out of reach for some families, caregivers and loved ones. Some simple activities you can do at home include looking through an old photo album, taking a walk outside on a nice day, light exercises, sewing, cooking, even just listening to old records, can all have a positive impact on overall well-being. These simple activities ultimately give the person a sense of purpose, inclusion and dignity. And is also something fun for families and caregivers to do together as part of their daily routine!
