August Lunch and Learn - "Exercise and Arthritis"

Basic Characteristics of Joints and How Their Structure and Function Changes With the Development of Arthritis

When we are young, the surfaces of our bones are smooth and supple and there is adequate cushioning and fluid in the space where bones come together. Arthritis means inflammation of joints and it causes the bony surfaces to roughen, the amount of cushion to decrease and deteriorate, and the fluid goes away resulting in:

  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Decreased Strength and Mobility

Severe cases of arthritis result in a joint that is bone-on-bone and requires surgery.

Management of Arthritis Can Include:

  • Pain relievers
  • Anti-Inflammatories
  • Physical Therapy
  • Steroid Injections
  • Massage Creams/Gels
  • The Use of Braces
  • Heat/Cold Applications

The most important idea is to keep moving! People who exercise and continue with their home programs developed in therapy tend to fare better than those who stop or are sedentary. Regular exercise helps to flush out the inflammatory compounds that tend to collect in joints during periods of sleep or other inactivity. Exercise increases blood flow helping to deliver necessary oxygen and nutrients to joint tissues. It also helps maintain strength and improves overall function. People who are surgical candidates will recover faster if they exercise for a period of time before the procedure. Exercise should be relatively pain-free and fun! Any amount of movement is better than no movement at all.

Some Good Exercise Choices for Seniors Developing Arthritis Are:

  • Pilates
  • Yoga
  • Pool Therapy
  • Tai Chi
  • Exercises Performed in Non-Weight Bearing Positions
