Dementia Training At The Promise House

The Promise House in Hiawatha, Iowa is a small, cozy assisted living house for older adults who are no longer able to care for themselves safely due to dementia. The number of residents is limited, which allows for more one-on-one attention from the care staff.

I provided the Dementia Friend Iowa curriculum to the care staff on Monday, August 19, 2024, and they were delighted to learn they would earn the Dementia Friendly designation for their organization. Most of the staff had experience working with residents who were experiencing cognitive decline but learned some new ways to best engage with them. I emphasized that they have the power behind how successful they are when working with residents with dementia by remaining calm, breaking tasks down into small, slow steps and talking through what you are doing and why you are doing it.
