May 2019 Compassionate Touch Workshop
Providing Compassionate Care to Seniors
During the evening of May 15, 2019, Stephanie Humphries and Kristin Woodland of Right at Home provided a hands-on workshop for family caregivers to learn the Compassionate Touch technique at the Family Caregivers Center of Mercy in Cedar Rapids. Attendees learned the basics of how to initiate and provide Compassionate Touch to their loved ones in an effort to promote positive well-being and strengthen relationships between them.
Compassionate Touch is a combination of skilled touch and compassionate presence developed by the Age-U-Cate Institute. Stephanie and Kristin completed Compassionate Touch Coach Training in February of 2019 which enables them to train Right at Home caregivers, family members, and other health care professionals in this technique. It is a technique, that when practiced regularly, can improve the success of caregiving for people with dementia. Touch is important for reducing stress, anxiety, and the incidence of challenging or problematic behaviors seen with advancing dementia. There is an overall lack of intentional, compassionate touch in health care so it is important to educate others about this technique as another strategy for supporting our seniors. Touch is good medicine!! Our Right at Home caregivers are trained in Compassionate Touch which elevates their abilities to care for our clients.
