Right at Home Allows You One on One Time With Your Client

I recently participated in a virtual workshop through Right at Home on Attracting and Retaining Top Office Staff and much of the information can be applied to attracting and retaining exceptional care staff as well. Our interview process used for caregivers has been tweaked more than once and with the new information acquired in this workshop, I am revising it again.

So, I was sitting in on an interview that my recruiter was conducting the other day and one of the questions she asked the applicant was, “Why do you want to work for Right at Home?”. The applicant’s answer really struck me because she described how working in long term care had really taken a toll on her as strict routines had to be followed and she never felt like she could spend that much time with any given resident. Meals and showers were at certain times and if she would get settled into working with one resident then a call button would go off and she would have to leave that person to attend to another one. She also mentioned that they were often short-staffed in long-term care. She realizes the beauty of home care in that she can be one-on-one with a client and give them her full attention and run on the client’s routine, not a mandated one passed down by the management of a facility.  This is something I point out when I conduct assessments with families who may be weighing options of home care vs assisted living community vs long term care and stress that someone will have the most freedom in their decision making while living independently at home.
