Stephanie Humphries Interviewed on Radio Iowa
Stephanie Humphries, owner of Right at Home Cedar Rapids and Right at Home Cedar Falls, was recently interviewed on Radio Iowa about how to keep seniors safe during the winter months. Stephanie said, There are so many factors to think about depending on their health, mobility, cognitive state and living environment. I think the number one goal is preventing a fall so making sure outdoor pathways are clear and using sand, salt, or kitty litter to roughen the walking surface."
Stephanie mentioned other considerations, "Older adults need proper footwear and gadgets used on the bottom of canes and walkers can be helpful in preventing these devices from slipping on the ice and snow. Older adults have thinner skin so applying a rich moisturizer to it is a great idea. In addition, they have a lower muscle mass to generate heat so dressing in multiple layers when going out is very important as seniors will experience cold stress easier and faster than younger people."
She stressed the importance of having a plan, and said, "Everyone should have an emergency plan with a primary contacts list, where to relocate if your home should be uninhabitable, and keeping a supply of nonperishables and extra medications in case you are unable to get out for a while due to weather."
