Reasons Why Beachwood Is a Great Place to Age in Place
What're a few of the things that make Beachwood such a great place for seniors to age in place? When I brought my family here ten years ago to open our first Right at Home senior care office I was thrilled with what I found to support seniors in our new community.
Transportation: Beachwood supports free door-to-door van rides with wheelchair lifts to take you shopping, to the Doctor, or anywhere else. Learn more about the Beachwood Community Senior Van Transportation service.
Health Care: World famous Cleveland Clinic and UH hospital systems, and more specialists than you can fit in the Pinecrest Silverspot Cinema.
Food: I think it's awesome that Choolah Indian is right here on Chagrin as is Corky and Lenny's Deli, P.F.Chang's, Giovanni's, Tres Potrillos, Shuhei, Yours Truly, IHOP, McDonalds, Brassica, and Mendel's KC Kosher BBQ! That's something to tantalize every taste bud. So much deliciousness, and that's just a few of the tasty morsels to be had on our main drag.
Diversity: Did you know that Beachwood's school system just added the holidays of Diwali, Lunar New Year and Eid to go along with Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur? This shows that our community isn't just becoming more diverse; we are celebrating diversity. About 20% of our residents were born abroad.
Recreation: So much engaging programing is going on at the Beachwood community center that it fills up a magazine, "The Upper Classman." Where else can you find the Happy Hookers knitting club, some canasta “card sharks”, the Red Hatters lunch bunch, a bus trip, a drawing class, a gallery exhibition, a movie, a lunch and learn, a healthy fruit celebration, and an Oreo Cookie party... and that's just in one typical week. Whew. You definitely can't do it all. Plus in nicer weather our parks, Preston's Hope accessible playground at the JCC, Canterbury Golf club and our massive Aquatic center by the Pickleball courts are the envy of the rest of Cleveland's East side suburbs.
Housing: There is something here for every style and budget. From new upscale apartments at the Vue and the Four Seasons, to the Aster, Atrium II, and communal living from Rose Assisted Living, Windsor Heights Memory care, Beachwood Commons, to R.H. Myers Independent Living Apartments and Wiggins on the Menorah Park campus. The city services go way above and beyond to support our seniors, for example, they will bring your trash cans out for you, if you ask.
Education: There are multiple programs to choose from at our public library, CWRU-Siegel lifelong learning classes, Maltz Museum exhibits, a plethora of lectures at the Temple Tifereth Israel, or the other 30 houses of worship, plus also Tri-C and John Carol Universities are just up the street if you want to audit a class.
Jobs: The 2,500 businesses call Beachwood home are hiring. Fun fact, Beachwood was named the 4th Best Place to Start a Business in Ohio, according to NerdWallet. Which doesn’t just mean lots of places to work. It also means Beachwood can afford great schools and services while keeping the taxes low. Want a volunteer responsibility? InMotion Parkinson’s gym, the Gathering Place cancer clubhouse and garden, Empowering Epilepsy, and the Alzheimer’s Association are all within a short walk of each other.
I served in our Navy and Marine Corps all over the country for 15 years, and I don’t take any of this for granted. Overall I’d say this lovely suburb is about as good as it gets for seniors. But don’t take my word for it, come see for yourself.
