National Traffic Awareness Month

Senior Care in Conyers GA

All summer long, many seniors will be enjoying the beautiful weather and exercising outdoors.  For many seniors, taking walks, jogging, or cycling are great activities that can be done outdoors in the summer.  Since so many people take advantage for the nice summer weather and choose to skip the gym in favor of exercising outdoors, August is observed as National Traffic Awareness Month.  When your senior loved one is out cycling or exercising on foot, it is important for them to be aware of the traffic on the roads at all times of day.  When your loved one follows traffic safety guidelines, they will be able to enjoy their outdoor workout safely and have a great time.  During the month of August, National Traffic Awareness Month, it is a great time for you and your loved one to review some of these safety tips:

Walk Against Traffic, Ride With Traffic

One important rule of the road is that if you are biking, you should ride with traffic, but if you are walking you should walk against it.  In either case, is is also important to stay close to the side of the road.  Bikers should stay in the bike lane if there is one and walkers should always use sidewalks if they are there.

Use Protective Gear

Many accidents and injuries can be prevented by using the proper safety gear.  On a bike, it is always important for your senior loved one to wear a helmet, no matter where they are riding.  In addition, walkers, joggers, and cyclists should consider wearing reflective vests or clothing and light-colored, easy-to-see clothing.  Being visible to traffic is key as many drivers may not be actively looking for pedestrians or cyclists.

Choose the Best Time of Day

Encourage your loved one to take walks or bike rides during the times of the day when the traffic is not busy.  This means avoiding rush hour in the morning, afternoon, and the midday lunchtime.  It is also important that your loved one only exercise outdoors during daylight hours.  At night when it is dark, it can be very hard for drivers to see pedestrians and cyclists out on the road.

Go With a Buddy

It is always a great idea for seniors to exercise with a buddy.  Aside from it being more fun and enjoyable, it can actually be safer, too.
