Helping Loved Ones Maintain Independence

Helping Older Loved Ones Maintain Their Independence

With Spring here and Summer around the corner, visiting siblings and loved ones are seeing that, “Moms and Dads really need a little help to continue being independent.” In December, we sponsored a CEU webinar on Discovering and Communicating the Need for Care that discussed the indicators that an older loved one may need more help to stay safe in their current living environment. You may review the webinar for more information:

Discovering and Communicating - The Need for Care

Hosted by Diane Darby Beach, PhD, MPH, Right at Home hosted this free webinar on December 13. Changing conditions in older patients can indicate that the current living arrangement or environment is no longer safe for them; but the patients themselves may be reluctant to make changes.

Planning For Extra Care

There are many options to help loved ones stay independent. It can be as little as enlisting help from a home care agency to assist with respite care, meal preparation, transportation, or homemaking services such as light laundry and housekeeping. Home care professionals — Certified Nursing Aids (CNAs) — can also provide stand-by assistance with bathing and dressing. The extra care that a loved one needs can happen anywhere — from his/her home to independent or assisted living facilities.
