Why did you get into caring for the elderly and disabled?

I have always been it seems a caregiver raising 4 children and helping with 13 grand kids which includes preemie triplets 2 lb to 3 lb, a little scary at the time but are now 12 and you’d never guess how they started out. Also caring for my mother who had dementia in her last years of life taught me a lot. I mainly enjoy helping those who can’t help themselves or just need a little extra TLC as well as care. I know how difficult it can be for loved ones to be there for a member of the family due to various situations as well as the client who needs help. We will all be there someday and hopefully we’ll have someone to trust and rely on, that is how I want to be seen.

What do you like best about being a caregiver?

I sort of answered that in my previous answer but to add on …. I enjoy relating and helping the clients where they are and in their various needs. Some just need to be heard and thought of as a friend more than a job or client. I feel so many in their later years or with disabilities feel they are a burden or a bother. My goal is to help each person have dignity and pride and know I am their friend.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Why did you get into caring for the elderly and disabled?

The main reason I wanted to become a caregiver was to gain experience so I would be able to take care of my parents and in-laws who are all in their 80's. What really pushed me into finding Right At Home was an experience I had at the DMV, there was this elderly woman in a wheelchair that was sitting behind us, she kept calling out a name over and over. So I turned to her and asked her if there was anything I could help her with. She said she didn't know where her "caregiver" had gone. She described her to me and I went around the incredibly packed DMV only to find her standing outside. I informed her that her client was looking for her, she rolled her eyes and went back inside. What I witnessed between them broke my heart, instantly you could tell that this was just a job, a paycheck. She didn't truly "care" for this sweet lady who I learned was in her 90's and just wanted to renew her I.D. so she could vote. I thought right then, if that cruel woman can get a job being a caregiver than certainly I could. I actually like people!

What do you like best about being a caregiver?

The reason I love working with the elderly is they have so much wisdom and so many life experiences to share. I also appreciate the fact that these families who use Right at Home have made the comfort and well being of their loved ones a priority.

What do you like to do in your free time?

When I do have free time, I have 4 kids and 4 grandkids so it is kind of scarce, I love to sew, which my mother passed on to me as her mom had with her. I love all kinds of crafts, reading and spending time with my family, dog, cat and grandpuppies!

How long have you been with Right at Home and why do you like working for them?

I have been with Right at Home for almost 3 years and I have learned a lot, I'm confident that when I get that call from my parents that they need me I'll be able to be there for them as they have always been there for me. Thanks for everyone at Right at Home for this recognition and providing this invaluable resource for the community.

January 2017: Shelby Stewart

Why did you get into caring for the elderly and disabled? When I was in High School, they offered a program that allowed high school students to go attend college and earn a certificate in MDA or CNA. When I graduated high school I figured why not give it a try and earn my CNA. I figured since I really enjoyed helping others to begin with why not a do it as a job or earn a living from it. I knew that this was the right choice during my lab and clinicals when my instructor told us about stories when they were nurses before teachers. During the stories they also told us this is the reason why they became teachers. I loved hearing the stories of how they helped people. The best thing about these stories was being able to witness some of them first hand. I was just a student but I could see my future of taking care of people. During my clinicals I met some pretty amazing people like how they are disabled or veterans who fought for our freedom. I loved going to the nursing home and seeing their smiles and the nicknames they gave us. One of my clients gave me the nickname Giggles because of my contagious laugh that I had from their jokes. What do you like best about being a caregiver? What I like best about being a caregiver is being able to be someone is there for my clients because their family isn’t able to take care of their loved ones. I also what I like best is being able to learn new cultures and what are some of my client’s favorites meals and things to do. It gives me such joy to go to work with my smile and now I’m making someone’s day better. What do you like to do in your free time? I love to explore the beautiful valley that I live in and see what it has to offer and take photos of scenery. I also enjoy spending time with my friends and meeting new people. I love going back up to my home town and see old friends and catching up on old times. How long have you been with Right at Home and why do you like working for them? I have been working with Right at Home since June of this year. I enjoy working for Right at Home because my office staff is very nice. They work with time I need off and if I am uncomfortable with working a certain shift. They are there whenever I need something.
