Attacking Alzheimer’s by Raising Awareness and Taking Action

During the month of August, we are preparing for the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s to help spread awareness and raise money for the cause.

Alzheimer’s is a cause that is near to the Scott Family as my grandmother, Sophia, lived with the disease for many years, and our family watched the progressive decline of her health. This personal experience brought my father, Moses, and our family to a deeper understanding of the devastating impact of dementia on all families.

My aunt has shared that the most challenging part of the diagnosis was watching Sophia change from a capable, independent person to someone who required help with normal activities like dressing. Sophia could remember events of the distant past but could not recall what she ate for breakfast.

To provide support for families affected by Alzheimer’s, raise awareness and money, our team members join the Essex, Hudson, and Union County communities to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. I joined this organization last year as the Community Engagement Chair of the Essex-Hudson-Union Walk Planning Committee and have been working closely with the organization to engage sponsors and community members, not just during the walk season but all year round.

We would love your support and encouragement with this effort. Consider donating or participating by following the link to ourteam page.It is always a great event, and we hope you will join us in our efforts.

Caring for a Loved One With Alzheimer’s

Caring for a senior family member with Alzheimer’s can be both stressful and emotionally exhausting. The specialized care required demands significant energy and patience.

We recognize this challenge and the need to maintain balance to offer the best possible care.

These are some tips that we recommend to families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s:

  • Ask another relative to step in for a day.- Reach out to a sibling or other close family member to give you a short break so you can have some time to yourself to rejuvenate.

  • Consider hiring an in-home caregiver for respite support.- Right at Home’s insured/bonded caregivers are experienced in caring for seniors with dementia and can help keep them safe and engaged.

  • Join a support group.- Alzheimer’s support groups offer support and understanding. Check the local community to connect with other people in this caregiving role.

  • Educate yourself.- Right at Home offers a FREEdementia and cognitive support guidethat provides tips and techniques to help you find new ways to connect with your loved one despite cognitive changes.

Dementia and Cognitive Support

Caring for a family member or friend with cognitive difficulties is demanding. If you’re doing it by yourself, it’s even tougher. At times, it can feel like you’re battling both the disease and the person. They need a sense of normalcy, but they don’t always act like they want it.

Our approach is about helping you reclaim precious moments with your loved one. You can learn to celebrate their good days instead of worrying about their bad days.

Right at Home offers a customized care plan with a combination of personal care, companionship, and homemaking, and just as importantly, we can provide respite care for you and your other loved ones.

Our August Inservice:

Emotional Losses in the Elderly

In recognition of National Grief Awareness Day, which is observed on August 30th, we will host our staff inservice to educate about the importance of honoring lossand the emotional aspects of coping with loss when working with the elderly.

It offers caregivers a comprehensive overview of the emotional challenges that individuals may encounter as they age, such as declining health, reduced productivity, the passing of loved ones, losing their homes, and decreased mobility.

Our inservice also provides practical advice on how nursing assistants can help ease these emotional transitions for their elderly clients.
