GERIATRIC SOCIAL WORKERS

Geriatric social workers help to transform senior care and play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for seniors and their families. This is a big change from past generations when seniors depended on family members or long-term living residences. Now, seniors can access personalized support, advocacy, and guidance while aging in place.

We work alongside and receive home care referrals from many geriatric social workers. Our local team provides a wide range of services, from companionship and homemaking to personal care and memory care, keeping the well-being of your older loved ones at the center of our care.

FITNESS TIPS FOR OLDER ADULTS

Staying physically active and mentally engaged throughout the year is essential for older adults. Being sedentary doesn’t provide any health benefits for older adults so the key is to keep moving to the best of your ability.

Regular exercise benefits daily tasks and activity helps the mind as well. The more you use your body and mind, the less prone you are to lose functions or have them diminished unnecessarily. Your chances of maximizing life are improved significantly by keeping your body strong and limber and your mind sharp and nimble.

Some tips for staying active all year round include:

  • Do chair, wall, counter or floor exercises that stretch and strengthen muscles and joints and help with balance.

  • Dance to music that makes you want to move.

  • Adequate water intake is a vital part of good health. The more active you are, the more water you need to stay hydrated and keep electrolytes in balance.

  • Start or join a book club.

  • Join friends for a regular movie or concert get-together.

  • Engage in volunteer activities or part-time work in your community.

RIGHT AT HOME DELEGATION DESCENDS ON Washington, D.C.

  • Corporate staff and Franchisees team up for congressional visits

  • 110 HCAOA members participate in annual fly-in to advocate for sensible policies

  • Two days of meetings with congressional office staff, committees, and federal agencies

Representatives from home care companies both franchisors and franchisees around the country- convened in Washington, D.C., on April 16-18 to educate lawmakers and regulators on issues important to the home care industry. Right at Home was represented by five Corporate staff members and three Franchisees. The lobbying day was sponsored by Right at Home's trade association, the Home Care Association of America (HCAOA).

The issues addressed in Capitol Hill meetings included the need to revise the 80/20 rule, which requires agencies to spend at least 80% of their Medicaid home- and community- based services reimbursements on caregiver compensation; the need for more time to submit bills to be paid by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA); and support for the Dole Act, which would allow for equal payment for in-home care compared to care provided in an institution.

Right at Home also met with VA personnel to discuss three key issues: the use of the VA's case mix tool (more training is needed to resolve confusion on how the tool works); a problem in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, area on categorizing veterans' care as household help to save the hospital's budget; and issues arising from the Office of Inspector General's report on the use of different language (and the problems that causes) in skilled care credentialing forms and directories operated by Optum, TriWest, and the VA itself.

Your words. Our quality care.

Thank you Chris McCormack for photographing our 20 year anniversary event, and taking some new headshots for our team. We are proud to share them!
