Our Family Commitment to Raising Awareness for Alzheimer’s

Hi all,

We are pleased to partner with the Alzheimer's Association to support the Essex-Hudson-Union Walk to End Alzheimer’s® on September 29, 2024 at 9am at The Clipper Pavilion in West Orange.

I joined the organization last year as the Community Engagement Chair of the Essex-Hudson-Union Walk Planning Committee. My reason for walking is to honor my grandmother, Sophia, and my past and present clients, many of whom suffer with some form of dementia.

Our Right at Home team is fundraising for the Essex-Hudson-Union Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. We would love your support and encouragement with this effort.

Consider donating or participating by following the link to ourteam page.It is always a great event and we hope you will join us in our efforts.

Take care,

Maeghan

This year, Right at Home of Essex County is partnering with the Alzheimer's Association of Greater New Jersey to support the Essex-Hudson-Union Walk, which is scheduled for September 29th. For this event, we are collaborating with Hearing Doctors of New Jersey and Summit Psychological Services to host a fitness fundraiser for Team Zumba.

Team Zumba is led by local Zumba instructor Franny Vales, who is motivated by her mother Angie’s battle with Alzheimer's. Angie, now 68, was diagnosed about seven years ago, and since then, Franny has mourned the loss of their close relationship. Franny and her mom shared a passion for music and dance, and Angie encouraged Franny to pursue a career in dance, often saying, "You need to dance because you have something special that you give to people, and I don’t think you realize that."

As a way to stay connected to her mother, Franny has become a certified Zumba instructor to express herself through dance and music. This has been a source of healing and she wants to help others who are facing similar challenges.

Join us for this event on Saturday, September 21st for a fun filled day of fitness and to raise awareness for Alzheimer's. A suggested $10 donation is requested to attend the event.

Communication and Dementia

According to the 2019 World Alzheimer Report, "Over 85% of respondents living with dementia stated that their opinion had not been taken seriously." When working with individuals living with dementia, it's essential to make them feel included as a part of their own care and to coordinate their own lives.

Aside from not being taken seriously, these insights among others, compound into a societal stigma and can be broken up into a myriad of different factors, including these four:

  • Power:The person with dementia loses their power and autonomy

  • Stereotypes:One person with dementia is just like everyone else

  • Prejudice:This includes "fear, disgust, and shame."

  • Discrimination:This means choosing to ignore or avoid a person living with dementia

The first step away from contributing to or giving into the stigma is by spreading awareness of dementia, distributing correct information about dementia, and sharing positively-themed literature and media about dementia care.

Our September Inservice: Fluid & Electrolytes

High quality senior care involves having a solid grasp of fluid and electrolyte fundamentals.

In order to provide the best possible care for our clients, we will be teaching our caregivers the following information and providing valuable tips:

  1. Electrolyte Essential:Learn about the key electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and calcium, and their crucial roles in maintaining the body's balance.

  2. Water Balance:Understand why keeping track of fluid intake and output is vital for maintaining proper hydration and overall health.

  3. Recognizing Challenges:Be aware of signs of dehydration and fluid imbalances, especially in vulnerable populations, to provide timely and effective care.

Twenty Years of Story

Right at Home of Essex County is celebrating twenty years by sharing more about the stories that make up the fabric of the Right at Home of Essex County family.

Our family business story, and the beginning of Right at Home of Essex County, starts with our grandmother, Sophia Brown Scott, and her diagnosis of Alzheimer's.

As her dementia worsened, it became harder for us to provide the care she needed. We turned to a home care agency and met Patty, who not only cared for my grandmother but also wrote a cherished poem, “Sophia’s Song.”
