Veterans do not come home from war; they come home with war. Join this one-hour webinar to explore the unique health needs of Veterans. The session will cover the physical, psychological, and psychosocial health consequences of military service, combat, and toxic exposure. It will reveal common injuries from complex, war-specific conditions. The discussion will also focus on a team-based approach to care management that includes clinical pearls you can adapt to your care setting.
Participants will be able to:
- Describe the health impacts of military service and deployment.
- Explain the importance of asking about experiences, jobs, and environments encountered during military service.
- Apply clinical pearls in taking a brief military/deployment history as the first step in care for Veterans.
- List services and resources available to Veterans for optimal post-deployment care.

About the Presenters:
Dr. Lucile Burgo-Black, a general internist and Assistant Clinical Professor at Yale University, has provided primary care for 38 years at the West Haven, Connecticut, VA medical center. She is the National Co-Director of the Post-Deployment Integrated Care Initiative and Pain Initiative, where she advises on pain management, opioid safety, and primary care. Her work includes training medical and community providers on the unique health concerns of Veterans and contributing to clinical research and policy development. She has published peer-reviewed articles and co-authored the Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine Chapter on Health Care for Military Veterans.
Dr. Stephen Hunt, a Clinical Professor of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the University of Washington, serves as the Physician Lead for the PACT Act Screening Initiatives and the VA National Director of the Post-Deployment Integrated Care Initiative. He also directs the Environmental Contaminants Clinic at VA Puget Sound. Dr. Hunt’s career has focused on deployment-related health issues such as chronic pain, TBI, mental health conditions, and military environmental exposures. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and is a lead author of the same Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine Chapter.
