ALS Fundraising Gala 2024 – Gratitude in Action, Navigating the ALS Journey with Support and Community

In our ongoing series of articles regarding Bill and Lori, we delve deeper into the intricacies of life with an ALS diagnosis. Through these conversations as we prepare for the October 2024 ALS Association Fundraising Gala - Journey to a Cure, one recurring theme emerges: the critical role of having a reliable support system to navigate the challenges posed by ALS.

Upon receiving an ALS diagnosis, many experience a profound sense of defeat. This revelation is a harsh truth that can be incredibly difficult to accept. The whirlwind of emotions that follows can leave one feeling overwhelmed and unable to articulate the full extent of what one's experiencing.

In these moments, it's all too easy to allow oneself to succumb to feelings of despair, but our discussions have revealed the transformative power of support systems. In our conversation with Bill and Lori, an extraordinary couple who graciously shared insights into their journey, they highlighted numerous individuals who have played pivotal roles in their lives. These individuals have had a profound impact on their overall well-being, serving as beacons of hope amidst adversity.

Allow us to showcase just a couple of these remarkable experiences to illustrate the profound influence of a support system:

Lori's Perspective:

Family and friends are key. Bill is the eldest of six. I have two siblings of my own. One is local, and the other is in Spokane, while Bill’s siblings live in other states across the country. Despite the distance, they all want to be there for us. Over the last few years, they've taken turns visiting. Last year, they managed to work their professional schedules around these trips, sacrificing vacation time to travel  to Seattle and stay here with Bill, so I can have some quality “me time”.

My sister, who lives in the area, has been a great help, giving me respite many times. Recently, I visited my brother and his wife, and they spoiled me. We really appreciate our family.

We've visited friends, spending time with them as they help feed Bill, who has needed assistance for several years now. He's humble enough to allow almost anyone, including his grandkids, to feed him. We are truly grateful for their support.

People often stepup  and  offer help wherever we go. We feel incredibly fortunate and blessed to have such a supportive family and friend network. Our church community and various other organizations have played a significant role in supporting us over the years.

Bill's Perspective:

We feel very fortunate to have the resources of organizations like the ALS Association, Steve Gleason, ALS TDI, as well as any others. However, more importantly, we are grateful for the people close at hand who help us as we navigate this journey. Not everyone has that support, which can be difficult to hear when I participate in support group meetings. While I try to offer encouragement on these calls, I am mindful not to boast about the level of care I receive.

Lori’s Perspective:

I want to share a quote I found not long ago. Bill often asks, 'I don't understand why people are doing so much for me.' But I found this and said: ‘you can tell how much a person has given to others and been there for others when you see it coming back on them’. And that's Bill, he's just always been a great guy, and everybody can count on him. And so, for me, it's heartwarming to see him get it back.

In essence, the journey following an ALS diagnosis is challenging, but it's made more bearable by the presence of a strong support system. Through the unwavering support and optimism of friends and family, our support system illuminates the path forward, reminding us that even in the darkest of times, we are never truly alone.
