Questions to ask when hiring a caregiver

If you decide on in-home care, there are several questions you should ask to ensure that your loved one will stay safe, healthy and happy:

  1. What happens if you or your caregiver becomes ill or are otherwise unavailable? What are the alternate arrangements?
  2. Do you pay your federal and state taxes, Social Security (FICA) and unemployment insurance, so that our family is not legally responsible?
  3. Can you verify that you and your caregivers are legally able to work in the United States?
  4. If you or your caregiver are injured at a client's residence, who is responsible? (Many homeowner's insurance policies exclude injuries to "domestic employees.")
  5. Do you perform criminal background checks and state abuse registry checks? Do you check caregivers' references from prior work history?
  6. Are you bonded or insured in case one of your clients is injured or there's a theft?
  7. How do you document that your services were indeed completed?

1. Develop a Client Care Profile
When you call Right at Home, we start by gathering information on how we can best help you. We’ll ask some questions to get a better understanding of your wishes. Then, we’ll arrange an in-home visit to perform a basic needs and environment assessment as well as answer any questions you may have.

2. Create a Person-Centered Care Plan
Next, we’ll craft a person-centered care plan that is tailored to your needs. The plan incorporates your and your loved one’s history, routines, and preferences in order to create support activities that will provide the most benefit. We will review the care plan with you in detail and modify it as you see fit.

3. Identify the Best Caregiver for You
Allowing someone into your home is a big step. We are honored and grateful that you put your trust in us. So, it’s important that we make the perfect caregiver match. We consider numerous factors such as interests, personalities, and services needed. All caregivers are screened, including background and reference checks. They are also bonded/insured. Of course, your comfort matters the most. If you ever have any concerns, we will work to find you a new caregiver.

5. Provide Ongoing Support
Right at Home caregivers keep detailed notes so you know exactly what happened each time they provided service. Supervisory staff also make periodic visits to your loved one’s home to ensure things are going well. And, because your care team is trained to notice and report changes in health or condition, we can quickly adjust care if needed.

Hi, my name is Ben Davis and I am the Care Advisor at Right at Home-Seattle. I have only been working with Right at Home for a little over a year now. This means that I still have a lot to learn. I completely understand that. In my short amount of time here, I have heard about many situations and experiences from the owners, our clients as well as our caregivers and the client care coordinators. Many circumstances that made me smile, laugh, and even cry.  There were also some situations that made me angry. I have a strong passion for helping individuals and families who need help with caring for themselves as well as their loved ones. I am also passionate about telling short stories that move people and allow for open discussion. I have decided to share these circumstances in a short story format.  My goal is to have individuals engage in discussion and even share experiences that they’ve had with a loved one or with a caregiver. I would love to create a community in which we can all learn the answers to the questions that we have about different illnesses, caregiving, and to also share our experiences with one another. Selfishly, I am hoping to gain knowledge and I hope that we all can all gain something from these shared experiences. In the meantime, let's all be sure to live every moment, laugh every day, and love beyond words.
