Providing Dementia Live Training
How to Better Communicate and Understand Someone Who Has Dementia
Did you ever hear the saying that "You don't know someone until you walk a mile in their shoe's"?
That's exactly what Right at Home Roselle tries to achieve when we help educate the CNA and Nursing students at College of Dupage
The greatest nursing teacher ever Gloria Kass (caught in photo Bomb!) invites us to teach another one of her classes. The students participate in the Dementia Live Experience(TM) created by Age-U-Cate which does a great job enabling students to experience some of the challenges that someone with Dementia may experience. The students are given tasks to perform, and the gear that they are suited in creates obstacles to their thoughts, site, and feeling senses, leaving them experiencing frustration, anger, confusion, and a host of other feelings. This gives them a greater understanding, creates empathy, and helps them understand the patience required to care for someone with Dementia.
After the students go through this challenging experience, they participate in a 10-15 minute review, to discuss how they felt, and some ideas of how better to communicate and understand someone who has dementia.
This course is offered to the general public through, Churches, Townships, Municipalities, and Private Businesses and Facilities that care for our Senior Communities.
With our aging population, and realizing the facts that 1 of every 3 of us will be afflicted with some sort of Dementia symptom by the age of 85, the odds of having to care for, meet, or help someone with Dementia in our lifetime is very great. Wouldn't it be a good idea to identify and know what to do if that time shall come?
Thank You CNA Students of College of Dupage for your caring hearts!
