Keynote Speakers

Opening Keynote Presentation: “Reconfiguring Life’s Third Age”
Tuesday, October 20, 9 – 10 a.m.

Robert Morison, Senior Advisor at AgeWave, the nation’s foremost thought leader on issues relating to an aging population is Tuesday’s keynote speaker. The traditional concept of retirement is being transformed by the massive influx of Baby Boomers, their attitudes and aspirations, and their collective economic clout. Enlightened organizations recognize what’s happening and are learning to serve “third agers” in innovative ways. Robert Morison will share findings and insights from the recently published What Retirees Want: A Holistic Guide to Life’s Third Age along with new research showing how circumstances and resilience have enabled this population to thrive – even during a pandemic.

Closing Keynote Presentation: “Can Advertising Grow Up? Or Is ‘Oldvertising’ Here to Stay?”
Wednesday, October 21, 2 – 3 p.m.

Lori Bitter, a nationally recognized marketing and development consultant, speaker, author and founder of The Business of Aging, will discuss marketing to older adults and why common strategies miss the mark. Only five percent of U.S. advertising is aimed at people over 50. Yet through 2030, older adults are expected to generate more than half of all consumption growth. And the world will have more 55-year-olds than 5-year-olds. So is advertising and marketing to older adults so bad? In study after study, more than 80% of older adults say they don’t see themselves in today’s communications. We will look at why ordinary communication strategies miss the mark and what has to happen to engage older adults, and also explore the role of ageism, technology and stereotypes.

Additional presentation topics:
• Fast-forwarding the process of technology adoption in virtual care management
• Covid-inspired startups, products and services in the aging space
• Expanding access to technology, tools and training for older adults and elders
• Equity and diversity in philanthropy, employment and civic engagement

The audience will include entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, city leaders, business and nonprofit leaders, older adults, caregivers and individuals interested in the aging conversation. Teresa Sansone Ferguson, AustinUP Executive Director, adds, “The Austin metropolitan area has one of the nation’s fastest-growing populations of older adults. While much progress has been made in the community to meet the needs of our older neighbors, technology and innovation can help make the effort more equitable and accessible for all.”

About AustinUP: AustinUP is a community alliance committed to making Central Texas a place where older adults live full, engaged lives. Formed in 2014 as a result of the Mayor’s Task Force on Aging, we work to prioritize the unmet needs of the Central Texas aging population, tap the assets of older adults to improve our community, and embrace innovation and creativity in the pursuit of an age-friendly culture.
