Caring As We Seek to Understand
Caring As We Seek to Understand
Politics, religion, personal issues, and even trivial matters can cause tension and conflict — unless the other parties feel understood. Without understanding, the conversation and relationship never progress, but stagnate in a repetitive cycle.
As humans we need to feel understood. We need to be listened to. I believe one of the best ways to provide care and help another person heal is to listen and to understand. We need to understand what they are saying and what they are feeling. This requires genuine concern, an ability not to judge, patience and good questions. This ability to listen, understand and show empathy is a great healing tool. It releases the person to leave behind past pain and frustration and progress along their journey.
While we work with clients with all sorts of challenges including cancer, Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Parkinson's, broken hips, heart failure, and more, some of the greatest healing occurs when we are able to facilitate understanding with clients, family members and other care providers. Many of the difficult dynamics can be solved when we take time to understand and show empathy. Teaching, encouraging and following up on this is a key part of what we do at Right at Home. We work to improve the quality of life of those we serve, and providing understanding is a critical component of our care. May we all do a little better each day as we care for those around us.
