Our History

During his years working as a hospital administrator, our founder Allen Hager watched many patients, especially seniors, leave the hospital and return home. But they did not necessarily return to health. Allen found that, once at home, a lot of his former patients were unable to care for themselves. He knew that with a little help, most of these people could lead healthy, happy lives in their homes. This became the idea for Right at Home.

After talking to dozens of families about the challenges they faced and what kinds of care would help, he became a certified nursing assistant to experience firsthand the needs of people who required professional assistance to continue living at home.

Today, with the help of Allen’s insights, Right at Home has grown to over 600 locations that serve tens of thousands of clients across the U.S. and around the world.

Zachary Peterson

President

Zachary Peterson, a native of Iowa City, has deep roots in the community where he attended Iowa City West High School before earning his degree in Entrepreneurship Management from the University of Iowa.

With over two decades spent in Iowa City, Zach has actively engaged in social volunteering and supported hospice efforts throughout Johnson County. His journey into caregiving began early, inspired by his experience assisting a family member with a disability, which underscored the importance of enabling individuals to comfortably remain at home.

Recently, Zach faced profound personal challenges when his mother suffered a spinal stroke on Easter this year. This experience further heightened his understanding of the stress and strain families endure during crises, motiving him and his team to offer comprehensive care options and skilled support from those who care. Zach’s commitment to caregiving is deeply rooted in his family’s legacy of service to Iowa City, spanning five generations. His great-grandfather’s contributions were honored with the naming of the Iowa City Hospice center.

Zach credits his compassionate and entrepreneurial spirit to his parents: his father, Dr. Donald Peterson, who recently retired from Pediatric Dentistry after 20 years of service in Johnson County, and his mother, Anne Thomas, a Registered Nurse with over 30 years of dedication to the Iowa City area. Their influence instilled in him a strong ethos of service and making a positive impact in the community. Looking forward, Zach is dedicated to building a lasting legacy that supports and enriches Iowa. He and his team are driven by the opportunity to continue his family’s tradition of service by providing much-needed relief to families in need.

Free Wheelchair Mission

Globally, an estimated 70 million people with disabilities have no access to a wheelchair. Those who cannot walk must crawl or be carried to their destination. In collaboration with a network of like-minded partners, Free Wheelchair Mission has distributed more than 1 million wheelchairs to people with disabilities in 93 developing countries around the world, providing renewed dignity, independence and hope through the gift of mobility, at no cost to the recipient.

As an organization, our work with Free Wheelchair Mission began in 2016 as we looked for a partner that would help us further our mission of improving lives worldwide. To date, our team’s efforts have raised more than $400,000 that has funded over 5,000 wheelchairs, which were distributed through life-changing Vision Trips to Vietnam, Ecuador and Costa Rica.

Josiah’s House

Over half of the children living in the Dominican Republic live below the poverty line and can be found on the streets in at-risk surroundings in order to make money. Josiah’s House runs family-style homes that provide vulnerable boys and girls with the basic necessities, education, life skills, and family home atmosphere needed to succeed.

Recently, 70 Right at Home offices came together to support Josiah’s House by supplying everyday items for the children of Josiah’s House. The group delivered suitcases full of clothing, personal hygiene items, toys, and other supplies.
