Parkinson's and It's Psycho-social Impact on Patients and Families

On Tuesday, November 26, Right at Home of Lower Manhattan and LESIAC (Lower East Side Inter-Agency Council) sponsored a breakfast meeting on Parkinson’s and it's Psychosocial Impact on Patients and Families.

"Social Worker and Program Coordinator at the Fresco Institute for Parkinson’s and Movement Disorder at NYU Langone Medical Center, Fatima Niakate, B.S.LMSW gave a great presentation that made a difficult and expansive topic understandable, informative and interesting. I think everyone learned something about Parkinson's,” said Albert Eshoo, Owner of Right at Home of Lower Manhattan.

Fatima explained what Parkinson's disease is, the signs, symptoms, and the emotional impact on care partners and family. The presentation included all the resources available to Parkinson’s patients, including medical, supportive services programs and advanced care planning.

• Nearly one million Americans and 10 million people worldwide live with Parkinson’s Disease
• Approximately 60,000 people in the US are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease each year
• As the population ages, the number of individuals diagnosed with PD will continue to increase
• Average age at diagnosis: 62
• Men are one and a half times more likely to have Parkinson's than women
