Signs Your Aging Loved One Needs Home Care

Are These Signs That My Aging Loved One Needs Home Care?

No matter how old “they” are or “we” are, most of us have a tendency to think of our aging loved ones as being somewhat invincible. We recall them as they were in the prime of their lives, strong and vibrant and able to handle just about anything that came their way. And that’s why, as they age, the very first signs are overlooked. Certainly, the signs may be subtle at first and days and even months can go by with family members doing their best to ignore what they are seeing. They may even make excuses but will find that as time goes by the signs will become less and less easy to ignore.

The best advice is to not let things go on for too long. The truth is that the sooner you address the situation, the easier and better it will be for the senior and for the family too. Here are the things that you may start to see that can indicate that your senior may require home care, whether on a part or full-time basis, live-in or live out.

Ask yourself if the senior has demonstrated any of the following:

  • 1. Losing track of time
  • 2. Forgetting things that they are supposed to do
  • 3. Inability to find their way to locations they have gone to many times before
  • 4. Losing their balance, problems walking and getting up and down from a chair
  • 5. Not maintaining basic hygiene and grooming
  • 6. Forgetting to take their medications
  • 7. Inability to do basic meal preparation and remembering to eat
  • 8. Having piles of unopened mail and neglecting to pay their bills
  • 9. General confusion about people, places, and things
  • 10. Severe mood swings
  • 11. Spending the entire day in bed
  • 12. Problems with toileting
  • 13. Inability to keep the house tidy and clean
  • 14. Forgetting to turn off the stove or shutting the water
  • 15. Lack of interest in leaving the house

There are no excuses for the above signs, especially if they continue to appear.

It’s important to remember that these signs will not go away “over time” and, in fact, may get worse. A home companion will improve the senior’s quality of life and can ensure their overall safety and comfort.
