Blue Zone Lifestyles: World's Longest Living People

Grace Atwood held a presentation and engaging discussion about Blue Zone Lifestyles at the Cypress Senior Center on January 25, 2018. There were over 40 people in attendance. Many people came up to me afterwards and said they learned a lot. Tanya Brown, speaker, author, and life coach, and myself, co-owner of Right at Home servicing Northwest OC and Southeast LA Counties, also helped put on the event.

Grace had previously read the article in National Geographic, "Secrets of a Long Life, "in 2005, by Dan Buettner and later the book, "The Blue Zones" also written by Buettner. In many ways, this book helped form her thinking that made her want to start a business where we can help people stay within their communities, and stay connected with each other.

Blue Zones is an anthropological concept that describes the characteristic lifestyles and the environments of the world's longest-lived people. Residents of these places produce a high rate of centenarians, suffer a fraction of the diseases that commonly kill people in other parts of the developed world, and enjoy more healthy years of life.

It’s fascinating to look at what these people have in common in such disparate areas as: Okinawa, Japan; Ikaria, Greece; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica;, and Loma Linda, CA – USA. They share some of these common traits: they move, eat wisely, reflect, they know their purpose and they stay connected.

Grace Atwood helped those in attendance learn about these places in the world where people are living better and longer, with a discussion on how we can apply what they have to our lives.

The attendees are seniors from 60 and above. They were very excited about learning how they can apply what they learned in the presentation to their lives in Cypress.
