National Parkinson Foundation: Moving Day

It happens every day over and over again across the United States, as well as across the globe. A person is diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. For the United States, these people facing a difficult and painful diagnosis accumulate to roughly 60,000 people annually, nearly enough to fill Heinz Field home of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

What Is Parkinson's?

Parkinson's disease is a neurological movement disorder that acts progressively taking the most competent of men and women into a battle to complete simple daily tasks. Unlike Alzheimer's, Parkinson’s affects 50 percent more men than women and the earliest stages of the disorder generally appear in a person's early to mid-60's. There are no known cures for Parkinson's, but medications, and in extreme cases surgery, can drastically control the symptoms of Parkinson's.

What Is Being Done?

There may not be a complete solution to Parkinson's disease, but there is a lot that can be done by organizations and individuals alike. The National Parkinson Foundation continues to grow its Moving Day initiative. Across the country, people from all backgrounds gather together to support the cause. To educate and serve as an outreach program, to fundraise to provide cutting edge research for doctors to treat Parkinson's, to advance the care each person battling Parkinson's, and to raise awareness of the growing prevalence of Parkinson's and the need for support of each and every community.

You're Part in the Cause

Our part as individuals may seem small, but creates a significant impact as we work together. The National Parkinson Foundation has made getting involved simple and fun. If you have a desire to further a cause, by educating, raising awareness, fundraising, or just walking with your friends and family you have a part to play in Moving Day.
